Creating FeedMe!, an inclusive recipe app for college students

FeedMe! was created as a part of the 2022 UTD UX/UI design challenge. Over the course of three weeks, my partner and I created a solution that would provide quick, easy, and healthy recipes for college students. Our app placed in the competition's top 5 submissions and was presented at the 2022 UX Design Banquet.

Empathize & Define
To further our understanding of the target demographic of our app, we surveyed over 50 UTD students and conducted 5 personal interviews.
We asked students about their eating preferences and habits, as well as their dining experiences at UTD. Below are some of our results.

How often do students eat on campus?

How often do students cook?

How much time do college students spend cooking per meal?
Ultimately, we found that college students face three main barriers when it comes to cooking healthy, quick meals: time, cost, and personal dietary needs.

Detailed brainstorming
After researching and defining our problem, we moved to create solutions for our users. Above are some photos of our brainstorming and planning process. We worked through various possible features before settling on a solution to prototype.

Our Solution
FeedMe! contains three main features that alleviate college student's largest barriers to healthy cooking.

Creating a profile

FeedMe! food quiz
Upon logging in, new users will be asked to take a short food quiz to assess their dietary habits and needs.
FeedMe!'s food quiz feature ensures that users are later recommended suitable recipes on their explore page. This feature makes finding relevant recipes easier and quicker for users short on time.

The Your Kitchen screen allows users to keep an archive of their favorite recipes, current ingredients, and recipe history. Users may also create their own recipes to share with their peers.
The "In Your Kitchen" feature is key to the cost-friendly experience provided by FeedMe!
By tracking the ingredients students already have in their kitchen via user input, FeedMe! can recommend recipes that don't require unnecessary grocery shopping.
A personalized explore page allows users to find relevant recipes quickly. With a quick scroll, students can find recipes based on their likes and dislikes as well as other recommended categories.
If a student is following a specific diet, their explore page will recommend recipes based on their needs.

FeedMe! ensures that college students have access to personalized, cost-effective, quick recipes for a healthier diet.
